Interior
The interior is roomy and comfortable, with seating being low enough for even short drivers - which makes it especially popular with women, but high enough to make viewing outside the vehicle good. Interior features are very good in comparison with other cars of its price class and even with other cars of a higher price class. Features such as MP3 radio, windscreen de-icer, electric windows, quality plastic finishes and good ergomics with regards to the dashboard and steering area.

Cargo space is slightly lower than average, however, with the easy fold-away seats the space expands to almost three times the size. The space, even without the seats folded away is roomy enough in any case for groceries and kids paraphernalia.

Exterior
Exterior is nothing special in the SUV range, but sport enough and classy enough to make anyone feel comfortable driving it.

Performance and Handling.
Reviewers are mixed when it comes to handling - but then, they always are! In general, handling is smooth and offers a ’sedan-like’ ride with a cushiony suspension. It would probably not be ideal for very rough 4×4 situations, but for town driving and general light-weight 4×4 conditions it handles really well. Steering and parking is easy.

Safety.
Overseas, the Tucson scored well in safety tests but one has to note that the South African version only has two airbags in front. It does come front and rear crumple zones.

The mom who suddenly has to brake for the ubiquitous taxi would be glad to know that even the lowest model comes with power assisted braking and EBD - Electronic Braking Distribution.

PROS

• Good exterior and interior styling
• Good safety scores and braking abilities
• Very good value for money

CONS

• Overall performance not up to its competitors
• Fuel efficiency could be better

Price range comparisons
The Tucson is very good value for money. The lower spec model starts at R228 000 while the top of the range V6 retails at about R280 000

Prices as compared to other cars in the same target market
The Hyundai Tucson can be compared to the Toyota Rav4, that retails at around R295 000 to R360 000, as well as the Honda CR-V, that retails starting at R289 00 for the manual transmission, up to R344 000 for the 2.2 diesel (automatic)

Interior
Since this is a sports car is probably not surprising that the back seating of the Tiburon is on the cramped side. Front seating is comfortable enough.

The control panel is blue backlit with gunmetal accents which makes it look stylish and sleek. There are plenty amenities available such as aircon, power steering and it comes with a 220-watt Kenwood sound system. Air conditioning is fully automatic (climate control)  in the 2.7L v6 model.

Exterior
This is where the Tiburon shines - this is arguably the one Hyundai model that really impresses with its exterior styling.

Opinion is generally that the Tiburon looks fast, even when standing in the driveway. It is described as sharp looking, stylish, aerodynamic and sleek.

Performance and Handling.
Generally it is recommended that if you go for the Tiburon, rather to go for the 2.7 L V6 model since the 2.0L is a considerably lighter drive with regards to acceleration and power. Despite this, the handling overall of both models are smooth, although being front-wheel drive the technology has been pushed to the limits with skillful engineering to give a good grip and cornering capabilities.

Safety.
As with all Hyundai cars, safety is of paramount importance and the Tiburon is no exception. It scores exceptionally high in all safety tests, although it must be noted that the rear seats have no airbags - for obvious reasons! It does score 5 out of 5 for driver protection in the US Government crash tests.

Standard features include ABS brakes, but strangely enough, not EBD (electronic brake distribution).

PROS

• Beautiful styling
• High safety scores
• Smooth handling

CONS

• Cramped back seats
• Acceleration and power disappointing on the lower spec model

Price range comparisons
The Tiburon is seen as really good value for money, with the 2.0L model retailing at R219 000 and the 2.7L Automatic retailing at R270 000

Prices as compared to other cars in the same target market
The Tiburon can be compared to the Honda s2000, that retails at around R370 000.

It can also be compared with the Maxda RX-8, of which the lower spec model starts at R305 000 and the higher spec model starts at R357 000.

That being said, the Sonata gets extremely good ratings all over and is definitely a GOOD BUY, although it does not come over as a particularly exciting car to drive and the exterior styling is not really anything remarkable.

But let’s not damn the car with faint praise - on with the detailed review to see why this car scores very high on most aspects of evaluating a car.

Looking at Hyundai’s trend for constant improvement, there might be great things in store for this car.

Interior
Everyone is impressed with the car’s roomy interior. Front seating and back seating offers a lot of space for both driver and passengers.

With regards to the features in the console, this is just as impressive for a mid-price range car.  It comes with a soft-touch plastic dashboard, easy to use controls, leather covered steering wheel, air conditioning, power windows, heated seats, leather interior, 8 power controlled seat settings for the passenger seat and so forth.

A couple of other interesting features are the built in climate control system, that re-circulates air inside the car if high levels of pollutants are detected outside, as well as a trip computer and a rear distance warning system.

Exterior
This is arguably the Sontata’s weak point - the styling is good, but just not exciting. Bland and boring, seems to be the overall opinion - but on the other hand, it is not bad. The styling was last updated in 2006.

Performance and Handling.
The Hyundai Sonata delivers adequate performance and a smooth ride, with firm and comfortable handling. Its noise control is very good since even at high speeds the Sonata’s cabin is surprisingly quiet. Transmission is smooth for both the automatic as well as the manual, although there does seem to be slight pause when downshifting.

Safety
This is where the Sonata really shines, getting extremely high safety scores in the United States Government safety tests (from the http://www.safercar.gov/  site).

The car comes with a multitude of safety features such as airbags, crumple zones and stability control (the first for a car of this class) - Electronic Stability Control is only optional on the Toyota Camry and not even available on the Honda Accord.

For accident avoidance, it has lock brakes (ABS), traction control systems and electronic brake distribution system (EBD).

PROS

• Extremely high safety ratings and features
• Very spacious interior
• Comes with more convenience features than other vehicles of its class

CONS

• Bland exterior styling

Price range comparisons

The Automatic retails at around R225 000 and the Manual transmision at R214 000.

Remember to add R1350 to the price if you are taking one of the two metallic finishes.

Prices as compared to other cars in the same target market:
The Hyunday Sonata can be compared in its class to the Toyota Camry and the Honda Accord as well as the Mazda 6. The Toyota Camry is not available in South Africa any more, so let’s just compare prices with the Honda Accord and the Mazda 6 2.3L Individual.

The Honda Accord Manual Type S retails for R239 500 and the Exec retails for R260 000. 

The Mazda 6 2.3L Individual starts at From R 253,900 (incl.VAT)

The 2007 Elantra has been completely redesigned with new styling (by the American Elantra team) however the car still projects a solidity and conservatism that might appeal more to a mature buyer.

Interior
Overall the impression is that the interior of the Elantra is very spacious and roomy for a car of its class, with ample legroom in the front seats. This is not just an illusion since the 2007 redesign added to its wheelbase and the car was also made wider, making the inside cabin volume of the Elantra bigger than, for example, the Toyota Corolla and the Nissan Civic.

The seats themselves are also very comfortable, although the versions available in South Africa only comes with a cloth trim, with no leather trim options available.

Air Conditioner comes standard with the South African models.

Exterior
The new design borrows heavily from the bigger Azera, and most reviewers think it that it is stylish. The only problem is that some reviewers do not think it very exciting - the main comments being that it will not stand out in the crowd, and that the design will probably appeal to a more conservative audience.

That being said, it is generally agreed that a lot of high quality engineering work went into the exterior, both from a design as well as a finishing perspective. It is a stylish car, not having to stand back a jot to its closest competitors.

Performance and Handling
Overall, the Elantra delivers zippy performance with a smooth ride, adequate acceleration and the handling responsive. Braking is good, and the front suspension is also very good, with the car not slipping away when braking hard and going round a corner.

Safety
Only the 1.6 comes equiped with Electronic Brake Force Distribution, which helps with accident avoidance since it distributes the braking effort and assists with braking for example, on wet surfaces.

Once again, the number of airbags available in the South African version of the car is considerably less than in its overseas counterpart. Where the overseas version of the car sports eight airbags, only the two in front are offered in the South African version.

The car comes with crumple zones, side impact protection bars and a built in transponder immobiliser. So basically the risk of getting hit by a taxi (protection through airbags) is considered less than the risk of the car being stolen (immobiliser)!

Price range comparisons
The 1.6L manual starts at R162 000, while the 2.0L retails for about R183 000.

Prices as compared to other cars in the same target market:
The Hyundai Elantra competes with the Honda Civic and the Toyota Corolla.

The Honda Civic starts at R177 500 for its lowest spec 4 door model (1.8L) and ends at R205 000 for its higher spec model (Manual transmission) with the leather seats and 6 speakers.

The Toyota Corolla has a variety of models to choose from, varying from the Corolla 160i Sprinter at R 175 300 to the Corolla 2.0 Advanced D-4D at R 203 900. The Corolla Corolla 2.0 Exclusive D-4D retails at R 226 600.

Early in 2006 the Getz had an overhaul with regards to styling but even though there were lots of significant improvements, especially with regards to the interior, the car still maintained the clean good look of the previous models.

Interior
General commentary regarding the interior spacing is that it appears huge in comparison with other cars of its class. There is plenty front & rear legroom with comfortable back seating for 3 people. With the technology of Space Wizard - the multiple rear seat folding capability there is 977 litres of useable luggage space when the back seats are folded flat, but even without that, the trunk size is of a decent quality.

The instrument panel has a center cluster with a trip computer, digital clock, fuel gauge and other warning lights and buttons. The instrument panel features large size, easy-to-read markings.

There is a centre-console tray for extra small items.

Exterior
The clear, wraparound headlamps, black bumper inserts and front bumper with integrated fog lamps give the front a cleaner and sportier look.

The curved roof with sturdy c-pillar enhances a stable appearance and the extra long wheelbase makes for better safety and performance.

The rear features a neat wraparound bumper while new, clearer combination rear lights further optimise signal visibility.

Performance and Handling
Overall the opinion seems to be that the Getz is very smooth to drive, handling rough roads very well.

Safety
Integrated crumple zones and load path impact diffusion adds to the overall safety of hte car, as well as the dual height, high-efficiency side impact protection bars. The car features driver and passenger airbags on the higher spec model.

Both the high spec 1.4-litre and the 1.6-litre automatic and manual transmissions offer drivers a four-channel ABS with EBD for increased road handling and better control in emergency braking and turning situations on slippery road surfaces. The ABS is only available on the HS models, not on the STD model.

PROS

• Smooth driving
• Roomy interior
• Tilt adjusted steering (unusual for a car of this class!)

CONS

• Fuel efficiency can be better

Price range comparisons
The Getz can be compared to the Fiat Palio, the Chevrolet Aveo Hatch and the Volkswagon Polo.

The Getz pricing starts at R109 000 for the lower spec STD model 1.4L, going up to R124 000 for the Higher Spec 1.4L.

The 1.6 Manual transmission retails for about R128000 and the automatic for R141 000.

Prices as compared to other cars in the same target market:
Fiat Palio - Palio II Vibe 1.2 8 Valve 5dr retails at R98 100, but this is a much lower spec car with regards to the engine size.

Chev Aveo Hatch - From R98 000 for the lower spec model, to R127 500 for the higher spec. The Aveo Hatch comes in a 1.5L engine.

VW Polo starts at R113 000 for the 1.4 lowest spec model, going up to R158 000 to the 1.6 Comfort Line Tiptronic.

All of these models come in a 1.6L engine size.

Interior
Interior layout of the control panel is good, with an overall impression of quality, although it is nothing really original or glitzy. One reviewer likes the vertical top-to bottom stacked layout and the two-tone effect.

Interior space is roomy, with the passenger seats higher than the front seats. The boot size is also roomy at 352L.

Exterior
The outside styling is attractive, although not exciting. The mirrors, bumpers and door handles are now colour coded with the rest of the car which is an upgrade from previous models and this contributes to a more ‘classy’ look.

Performance and Handling
Hyundai’s four-cylinder, 1.6-litre DOHC engine fitted with Continuously Variable Valve Timing technology CVVT has been designed to improve torque and this makes it responsive. The engine does seem to be noisy if pushed hard though.

The braking system is efficient especially because the GLS HS model has anti-lock brakes and Electronic Brake Distribution which improves stability in hard braking situations by balancing brake force front to rear. Please keep in mind that the STD model does not have ABS brakes.

Safety
The braking system will do much for accident avoidance. The HS model seems to have two airbags (passenger and driver) while the STD model only has an airbag on the driver side (the model available in the USA for 2008 comes standard with 6 airbags!)

Both the STD and HS models come with crumple zones in the front and the rear.

PROS

• Great value as an entry-level car
• Good safety ratings due to air bags, side impact bars, crumple zones and anti-lock brakes

Price range comparisons
The Accent can be compared to the Honda Civic (although the Civic starts with a larger engine spec), the Mazda3 and especially the Toyota Corolla.
The Accent starts at around R125 000 for the lower spec GLS STD model, going up to R147 000 for the GLS HS Automatic transmission. The GLS HS Manual transmission fis neatly in the middle at around R138 000.
